Dear Mentor, How do I process through my broken heart?

When My Heart is Broken

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in Spirit.” ~ Psalm 34:18

Dear Christian Mentor,

This last year has been full of sadness, and I feel broken. Over this last year, someone I loved very much passed away. I lost my job, which caused me to relocate for a new job, and I am now having difficulty finding good friendships in my new town. I know the Lord cares for me, but I am struggling with the deep hurt and loneliness I am feeling.

Dear Mentee,

Today, I encourage you to find comfort in knowing that the Lord, your Heavenly Father, deeply understands and cares for you during times of struggle and hardship. He has not only witnessed but also experienced brokenness. He feels sorrow and sadness when He weeps for our sins, and He felt betrayal when His followers fled at the time of His arrest. He experienced anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane, lamenting His death, and He felt brokenness as He gave His life on the cross. This deep understanding of pain allows us to be honest and express our negative emotions to our Heavenly Father - the anger, frustration, grief, and sadness that weigh us down.

We do this through lamenting, which honestly expresses sadness, sorrow, pain, or confusion to our Lord. It's not just about venting our emotions but also about seeking His comfort and guidance. When we confess our laments to the Lord, it releases the negative feelings that crush us. The Lord invites us into a time of lament and promises that He is close and will help us.

I encourage you today to bring your lament to the Lord. Be open and honest, knowing that your Heavenly Father knows how you feel because He has experienced the brokenness of hardship and grief.

I pray you can feel your Heavenly Father's love during this time.
